Drainage means the removal of excess groundwater, surface water and runoff from a structure or area by gravity or pumping in order to prevent disturbance of this excess water or to prevent damage to it. In geotechnical engineering, drainage is installed to drain excess groundwater to prevent liquefaction and the dangers of high pore water pressure.
